Microsoft Teams is getting a few small updates that could make virtual meetings a little less awkward and a little more productive.
At AIR Technology Services, we support organizations throughout Wisconsin that rely heavily on Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365 for day-to-day communication and collaboration. While these updates may seem minor, small usability improvements can make a surprisingly big difference over time.
Have You Ever Accidentally Left a Teams Meeting?
You go to click something during a meeting — maybe the Share button to present your screen — and suddenly you’re staring at your desktop while everyone else continues the conversation without you.
Awkward.
For years, that has been a very believable excuse.
The Quit option inside Microsoft Teams has caught plenty of people off guard, especially during fast-paced meetings where users are quickly clicking between controls.
Enough people complained that Microsoft finally decided to redesign it.
Microsoft Moves the Quit Option Away From Meeting Controls
Microsoft recently introduced an alternative way to fully quit Teams using the Windows system tray — the small area near the clock on your desktop.
The goal is simple:
Move the Quit option away from the main cluster of meeting controls so users are less likely to click it accidentally.
If you use the desktop version of Microsoft Teams, the change should already appear automatically without any special configuration required.
It’s not a dramatic update.
But it’s one of those subtle improvements that removes everyday frustration.
You Can Still Accidentally Leave a Meeting
To be fair, this does not completely eliminate the possibility of clicking the wrong thing.
If you are aiming for “Share” and accidentally hit “Leave,” you can still disappear from the meeting unexpectedly.
We are not living in a perfect world just yet.
However, there is another useful feature many users don’t realize exists.
Turn On Meeting Exit Confirmation
Inside Microsoft Teams, you can enable a confirmation message before leaving a meeting.
To enable it:
- Open Microsoft Teams
- Go to Settings
- Select General
- Enable the option to confirm before leaving meetings
That extra “Are you sure?” step can save you from disappearing from an important meeting at exactly the wrong moment.
Another Helpful Update: Hide the Meeting Toolbar
Microsoft is also rolling out another small but helpful improvement.
Users will soon be able to hide the Teams meeting toolbar during calls.
That means:
- More usable screen space
- Fewer distractions while presenting
- Cleaner viewing during meetings
- A more polished collaboration experience
For organizations that spend hours each week inside Teams meetings, these small updates quietly improve the overall user experience.
Small Improvements Add Up
Technology productivity is not always about major upgrades or flashy AI tools.
Sometimes the best improvements are the ones that simply reduce friction during the workday.
If your team relies heavily on Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, or remote collaboration tools, even small usability improvements can help meetings run more smoothly and professionally.
